Crafting is as old as humanity itself, and can be traced to the stone age when primitive humans created tools out of bone and wood into functional items. The origin of the word "craft" is the Old English - craeft or strength or wisdom which instills the connection between tinkering and using local materials in a wise way.
Cultures of old derived notoriety and reputation from the quality of the skills and trades from their local area: be in textile dyeing, weaving, pottery, embroidery, blacksmithing, basketry, leatherworking! The list goes on!
Working with our hands has a very strong impact on the brain: rhythmic movements calm the brain and lower stress hormones. Creating physical things fights sadness, and releases feel-good brain chemicals. Working with physical and natural materials also pulls us into the present moment, and acts as a waking meditation, which time on screens cannot match. Crafting can also build muscles and flexibility in joints which fights the effects of ageing.
Our crafting workshops currently include perfume making, natural perfume making and candle making but we are always interested in adding more craft workshops for people to enjoy. Reach out to us if you have a craft that you can share with a wider audience - you would have access to SeaLight Soap & Candle shop which seats up to 10 people.
Types of crafts could include:
- basket weaving
- wreath making
- flower arranging
- felting
